“Bullying has become virtually non-existent at the school,” the principal announced.
Stunned and taken by surprise, I stuttered, “What?”
It was my end of my first year review at the local Catholic High School. I sat nervously in the principal’s office awaiting the decision whether he would continue the yoga programme for another year.
I had asked if he’s noticed any changes from the yoga. He replied, the usual – yes, the girls were calmer, more focussed and could concentrate well in lessons.
But what came next was so unexpected. He continued, “But it’s not the bullies who are finding more compassion, it’s the students who were being bullied that are no longer allowing it anymore.”
Whoa!
This Job had been the opportunity of a lifetime! An entire year of teaching yoga at the school as part of the religious curriculum, a mandatory class for every student in every class – that was over 1000 girls / week. Phenomenal!
And the experiment had paid off.
What we didn’t account for were the side effects – confidence, self-esteem, inner strength, girl power and ….an end to bullying.
It was everything I had wanted at high school and what I wished for every teen girl.
I felt like the universe had just given me a big slap of a wake up call and I was walked of that office slightly dazed, euphoric.
Something changed that day. I no longer thought about the physical impact yoga could have, but the mental and emotional benefit it was creating.
How did I miss this ?
When you teach yoga to kids, you have an opportunity to impact and change lives.
In every class, you can help them with their physical health through asana for sure, but also their mental and emotional health. It is this that sets yoga apart from every other form of physical activity and the key to an impactful class.
The more I introduced tools for the mind and emotions, the more the kids and teens responded and the bigger the difference. Many a teacher or parent would ask, “How did you do that?” As their child walked out blissed, calm and happy.
I knew the formula was working when an 8 year old girl, with tears in her eyes, walked past me into class saying, “I really need yoga today.” Or the 4 year old boy at an ECH centre with special needs who usually sat at the back of class, joined in for the first time and did the entire class, then went for lunch with his classmates.
This is the impact you can have as a children’s yoga teacher. Every day, in every class, there is a child who needs your help. Not with games though, but classes that impact on all levels, with the right structure to lead them there.
If you want to create this type of impact for children/ teens, learn how to teach substantial classes that help on a physical, mental and emotional level and see the difference in ONE class, then come join the Kids Yoga Training Course.
