Main Sequence:

  • Butterfly Pose: Sit facing each other, bringing the soles of your feet together. Hold hands and gently flap your ‘wings’ like butterflies.
  • Tree Pose: Stand tall and place one foot on the opposite inner thigh. Imagine being a strong and steady tree swaying in the wind.
  • Cat-Cow: Move to all fours and alternate between arching your back (cow) and rounding it (cat), accompanied by animal sounds.
  • Cobra Pose: Lie on your stomach, place your hands under your shoulders, and gently lift your chest while looking up like a cobra.
  • Child’s Pose: Sit back on your heels, stretch your arms forward, and rest your forehead on the mat. Take a few deep breaths.

Cool-down:

  • Star Pose: Stand with legs wide apart and arms extended out to the sides. Stretch and imagine being a bright star.
  • Resting Pose: Lie down comfortably, close your eyes, and take deep breaths, relaxing each body part.

Breathing Exercise for Children: Bunny Breath

The Bunny Breath is a fun way to introduce deep breathing to kids.

  1. Sit comfortably in a cross-legged position or on your heels.
  2. Close your eyes and take a deep breath in through your nose.
  3. As you exhale through your mouth, make a soft “haaa” sound, imagining you’re a bunny blowing out a birthday candle.
  4. Repeat this bunny breath exercise for several rounds, feeling your breath calming and soothing you.

Relaxation Techniques for Kids: Cloud Meditation

This meditation helps kids relax their minds and bodies.

Lie down comfortably on your back. Close your eyes and imagine you’re lying on a fluffy cloud. As you inhale, imagine the cloud getting bigger and softer under you. As you exhale, release any tension or worries into the cloud, watching them float away. Stay in this peaceful cloud for a few minutes, enjoying the tranquility.

Partner Yoga Poses for Kids

Partner yoga builds trust and connection between children. Here are two partner poses to try:

  1. Double Downward Dog: Both partners start in a downward dog pose facing each other. Lift one leg and gently touch your feet together in the air and hold for a few breaths. This pose encourages balance and teamwork.
  2. Flying Boat: One partner lies on their back, holding the other partner’s hands. The standing partner lifts their legs into a boat pose while the lying partner lifts their upper body into a half-boat pose. This pose enhances core strength and coordination.

Conclusion

Introducing your child to yoga can be a rewarding journey that fosters physical health, emotional well-being, and mindfulness. By using playful techniques, engaging sequences, and partner poses, you can create a positive and enjoyable yoga experience for your child. Remember to keep it light, fun, and age-appropriate while emphasising the importance of self-care and mindfulness.
