As a dedicated yoga teacher with over 27 years of experience working in schools, I have witnessed firsthand the transformative power of yoga on children and teenagers. Yoga is not just about playing fun games with kids; it’s a holistic practice that nurtures physical health, mental well-being, and emotional balance. The question we must ask ourselves is,

“Should yoga be mandatory in schools?”

My resounding answer is yes.

The Impact of Yoga in Schools –

One of the most touching stories that comes to mind is that of a 9-year-old boy who struggled with extreme anxiety and had trouble focusing in class. After joining our first yoga class, his little face beamed. Over the next few weeks, he learned techniques to calm his mind and embrace his emotions, which not only improved his concentration but also helped him build self-confidence. His teacher reported that he was now participating more actively in class discussions, showcasing his newfound belief in himself.

Similarly, a teenage girl in Year 10, (16 years old), found solace in yoga amidst the pressures of exams and peer expectations. She shared that the practice helped her manage stress and maintain a positive body image, giving her the strength to navigate the challenging terrain of adolescence.

The Impact of Yoga – By the Numbers

Statistics don’t lie, and the impact of yoga on students is both impressive and promising. According to a study conducted by the National Institutes of Health (NIH), schools that integrated yoga into their curriculum reported a 30% decrease in disciplinary actions. Moreover, academic performance showed an uptick, with students displaying enhanced focus, attention, and problem-solving skills.

I have seen this firsthand when teaching yoga in the place of detention at a Catholic Boys High School. Instead of detention, the boys were given the option of attending a weekly meditation session. The class grew over the term as word spread how good the class was. The school eventually opened up the class to everyone, as it became so popular. We even had teachers sit alongside the boys, to improve their mental health and calm their overloaded nervous systems.

Furthermore, the Australian Psychological Society found that schools offering mindfulness and yoga programs experienced a reduction in stress and anxiety levels among students by a staggering 50%. These numbers highlight the role of yoga in fostering emotional resilience and overall mental well-being.

The Call for Change

“Yoga is not about touching your toes, it’s about what you learn on the way down.” – Jigar Gor

It’s time for a shift in our education system. As the benefits of yoga become more evident, the call for mandatory yoga sessions in schools grows louder. Imagine a generation of children who grow up with tools to manage stress, embrace their emotions, and foster healthy relationships. Envision classrooms where focus and empathy prevail, leading to a more harmonious learning environment.

The question of whether yoga should be mandatory in schools seems to be answered by the heartfelt stories of transformation, the compelling statistics, and the wisdom contained within yoga itself.

With organisations like Zenergy Yoga leading the way, the movement to integrate yoga into school curriculum is gaining momentum, and rightfully so.

Let us work together to provide our children with the gift of yoga, empowering them to lead healthier, happier, and more balanced lives.
